| Peter Norton emigrated
to Australia from the United Kingdom,
aged 8, and immediately developed
a close affinity with the colours
and light of the Australian landscape.
Presented with a camera as a birthday
present in his late teens, Peter became
a keen self-taught amateur photographer,
however, this was put aside when he
became involved in the fashion industry,
leading to a successful career spanning
25 years, and the creation of his
own self named label, Peter Norton.
During this time, Peter won 7 FIA
(Fashion Industry Awards of Australia),
for best design across a variety of
categories, such as“Best Weekend
Wear”, culminating in a place
in the prestigious “Fashion
Hall of Fame” and was also Chairman
of the Australian Fashion Awards and
Vice-President of the Fashion Industries
of Australia.
After moving the focus of his business
to corporate wear, and eventually,
selling the successful company, Peter
returned to his first love photography.
From that point, his work has focused
primarily upon macro images of exotic
flora, as well as landscapes, travel
photography and then, following a
trip to Antarctica, wild life. An
avid traveller, Peter has found inspiration
while exploring South East Asia, central
and coastal Australia and further
afield, to South America and Antarctica.
From 1999, Peter has been Artist
in Residence at the Sydney Renaissance
Hotel, now the Harbourside Marriott
Hotel, with two exhibitions a year
covering macro flower studies, the
Hunter Valley, Cambodia, Australian
icons - Sydney Harbour, Uluru and
the Great Barrier Reef, Antarctica
and then South America. Peter has
also completed private commissions
for Patrick Plains Estate Pokolbin
with a Hunter Valley images, flower
images for Whale Beach Restaurant
and food images for La Goulue Restaurant,
all on permanent display.
For 2003, Peter's focus has been
primarily upon exotic flora, with
a twist, exciting and innovative work.
Entitled, “Bloom”, his
next exhibition is the culmination
of the last 12 months of work, photographing
flora across the seasons. All are
exotic flora, some back lit by natural
sunlight, creating a translucent effect.
The investment of a large format printer,
capable of printing images on to canvas
and fine art papers has given a new
dimension to his work, and a brand
new approach. Peter, and his wife,
Kylie now produce everything in-house,
in their inner-west studio warehouse
(Sydney, Australia), from concept,
photography and finished artwork through
to the actual printing of the images
themselves. |
